In the history of glass tinting and coatings, consumers have realized the many benefits of conventional tinted windows. In hot climates, this application is absolutely necessary. It's never fun to return to a vehicle with an interior that seems hotter than a barbecue grill on the Fourth of July. While many drivers place cardboard shades on the windshields, 3M has developed a Solar Reflecting Film that's permanent, transparent and keeps the car cooler even when it's parked. The film is already on the rear windshields of luxury cars. More automakers are expected to offer the film on their 2004 editions.
- Sunlight is electromagnetic energy, which is propagated by
electromagnetic waves. Healthwise, the most important parts of the sunlight
electromagnetic spectrum are: ultraviolet radiation (UV),
invisible to the eye; visible light that allows us to see; and infrared
radiation, which is our main source of heat but is also invisible.
Excessive exposure to the sun is known to be associated with increased risks
of various skin cancers, cataracts and other eye diseases, as well as
accelerated skin aging. It may also adversely affect people's ability to
resist infectious diseases, and compromise the effectiveness of vaccination

- The solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface is composed of wavelengths ranging from 290 to 4000 nm, a scope that includes ultraviolet radiation (UVB, 290–320 nm; UVA, 320–400 nm), visible light (VL, 400–700 nm), and infrared radiation (IR, 700–4000 nm). Of this energy, 40% lies in the 700–4000 nm range, i.e., infrared radiation (Koller 1965). Throughout evolution, living cells have been exposed to this polychromatic electromagnetic non-ionizing radiation. Some of these wavelengths are hazardous to the cells, damaging essential molecules such as nucleic acids and proteins. It is commonly accepted that solar UV is responsible for almost all deleterious photoinduced effects on human skin. UVA and UVB are believed to constitute major risk factors in the etiology of human skin cancers and photoaging.(Gange et al. 1986;Kligman & Kligman 1989;Ananthaswami & Pierceall 1990).
- Much of our knowledge about solar radiation effects comes from experiments with monochromatic UV. Consequently, the additive, synergistic, or antagonistic interactions between the different solar wavelengths have been largely overlooked. This is true particularly of the biologic effects of IR radiations, which have been neglected due to the idea that these effects are almost always mediated by heat enhancement, leading to the induction of heat shock proteins (HSP) (Lindquist 1986;Maytin et al. 1993).
- Excessive UV exposure results in a number of chronic skin changes. These include various skin cancers of which melanoma is the most life-threatening; an increased number of moles (benign abnormalities of melanocytes) and a range of other alterations arising from UV damage to keratinocytes and blood vessels. UV damage to fibrous tissue is often described as "photoaging". Photoaging makes people look older because their skin loses its tightness and so sags or wrinkles.
